Berries

Also called: blueberries, anthocyanins, ellagic acid.

Treating cancer Grade D

No human evidence of benefit, or none that survived testing.

Berries have been studied in people with cancer, and never to see whether the cancer changed.

Thirteen completed trials, and not one measured what a cancer did.

The claim

The claim is that compounds in berries act against cancer cells.

What it does

Berry compounds are active in a dish. The concentration question applies here as it does to every compound in this chapter, and the register holds no measurement of it.

The evidence

Thirteen completed studies of berries or their compounds are registered in cancer.1

Their primary outcomes are inflammatory markers, blood glucose, hormone levels, blood concentrations, cognitive scores, quality of life, symptoms and tolerability. Not one is survival, recurrence or tumour response.1

This is what "mechanism only" looks like when you go and check: not an empty field, but thirteen real studies none of which asked the question this entry is graded on.1

What is absent

No completed trial of berries in cancer has a survival, recurrence or tumour-response endpoint.

Scope: any tumour type.

Established by registry search, ClinicalTrials.gov, query intervention "berries OR blueberry OR anthocyanin", condition "cancer", status completed, checked 2026-09-16. Result: thirteen completed studies, no clinical outcome endpoints.1

What to ask

Is eating well going to make a difference to my cancer, or is it about keeping me strong for treatment?

The dish-to-person gap

Berries is eaten as food rather than taken as a measured compound, and the register holds no human pharmacokinetic measurement for it.

When to call your team — no warning signs are recorded

If you have changed how you eat because of something you have read, or are thinking about it, the people treating you can only weigh that if they know about it. That is true when nothing has been written down here, and it is most true then.

The register records no warning signs for this entry. That is not a statement that nothing can go wrong.

Interactions

The register holds no measured interaction between this food and a cancer treatment class. An empty list means nobody has measured it, not that nothing would happen. Concentrated extracts are a different question from the food.

Nobody having looked is not the same as nothing being there. That is what this line says and all it says.

The whole interaction list, and how to turn it into a pharmacy review request.

Find a trial instead

Thirteen completed studies exist. None measured what happened to a cancer.

Search ClinicalTrials.gov for recruiting studies of berry OR anthocyanin

A trial is the same decision with monitoring, a known preparation and a doctor who knows what else you are taking.
