Mindfulness approaches
Also called: MBSR, mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation.

Anxiety and depressive symptoms Grade B
Good human evidence, with a limit worth knowing.
Mindfulness courses help a little with worry and low mood, and the benefit may not last long.
Randomised, modest effects, mostly in breast cancer, durability unclear.
The claim
The claim is that mindfulness practice reduces the anxiety and low mood that come with a cancer diagnosis.
What it does
Whatever the mechanism, this is graded on what randomised trials measured rather than on the explanation offered for it.
The evidence
A meta-analysis of randomised trials in breast cancer, against usual care or a waitlist, found a moderate reduction in anxiety and a smaller one in depression across fifteen studies.1
Two findings that summaries of this literature usually drop are in the book. The anxiety benefit was no longer detectable four to nine weeks after the programme ended, the same durability pattern as talking therapy from an entirely different literature.1
And the prediction intervals cross zero for both outcomes. The average of the trials done so far shows benefit; the spread across them is wide enough that a fresh trial could find nothing at all. That is a different statement from a confidence interval and the book explains why.1
A broader review across 36 studies and 1,677 participants, of which sixteen were randomised, covers the wider family of mindfulness approaches.2
The studies this rests on

Pooled randomised trials of mindfulness-based stress reduction in breast cancer1
A meta-analysis, summarising randomised trials, measured what patients reported.
reduced anxiety and depression scores against usual care; no significant anxiety difference four to nine weeks after the programme ended.
standardised mean difference -0.489, interval -0.734 to -0.244. anxiety; depression -0.258, interval -0.347 to -0.170; prediction intervals cross zero for both
What is absent
The randomised evidence is concentrated in breast cancer, and no trial in this record shows the anxiety benefit persisting once the programme has ended.
Scope: cancers other than breast, and durability.
Established by trial scope, checked 2026-09-16. Result: the pooled trials enrolled patients with breast cancer, and no significant difference in anxiety was observed four to nine weeks after the intervention.12
What to ask
Is there a mindfulness or stress programme attached to this service that I could join?
The dish-to-person gap
Mindfulness practice is not a compound that reaches a concentration in the blood, so the dish-to-person comparison does not apply.
When to call your team — no warning signs are recorded
If you have started something new, or are thinking about it, the people treating you can only weigh it if they know about it. That is true when nothing has been written down here, and it is most true then.
The register records no warning signs for this entry.
Interactions
A talking or behavioural treatment is not checked against treatment classes in this register.
The whole interaction list, and how to turn it into a pharmacy review request.
Find a trial instead
Programmes run both inside trials and inside ordinary cancer services.
A trial is the same decision with monitoring, a known preparation and a doctor who knows what else you are taking.
